The glass room is a collection of artworks which demonstrates how personal data might be gathered and used by companies and other organisations.
The exhibition featured works such as Megapixels, a facial recognition software which scans your face and matches you with a face found in their data base, and Forgot your Password, big tomes which include thousands of leaked Linked In Passwords.
Another part of the exhibit features How Long Does It Take to Read Amazon Kindle’s Terms and Conditions? a tablet playing a video of an actor reading kindle’s term and conditions. The video is over 9 hours long, showcasing how terms and condition policies are purposely made to be too long to read in detail, prompting consumers to agree to conditions which they might not be aware of.
Lastly, Data Production Labour tracks your Facebook activity for 2 minutes and calculates how much “labour” you’ve unknowingly just performed for Facebook, as your scrolling has produced a revenue for the company from advertisements and data collection for sale or other uses.
We found that the Glass Room project was an excellent example of how to demonstrate different aspects of data privacy to all kinds of visitors with various knowledge in the subject. This prompted us to consider of creative ways to demonstrate data privacy issues and how we might unknowingly divulge personal information for convenience.
