Following further group meetings, we decided to not use our self-performance installation idea but to focus on the matter of surveillance instead. We made this decision as we thought that, although the self-performance idea was interesting for us, it did not necessarily have the thought-provoking impact we would like for our participants to experience through our installation.
The first steps that we took following this change in direction was to research on different types of surveillance and any related installations.
Later that week, we brainstormed a concept for an installation where the room would “spy” on you through the use of microphones and display your conversation on one of the walls of the room. To emulate microtargeting techniques, key words detected from the participants’ conversation would show relevant advertisements on the wall projection and bombard the participants with advertisements.
After a discussion with our module leader, we decided to not take this installation idea further. This was because the installation did not accurately portray how microtargeting works, which is a much more complicated and in-depth process than just listening in to people’s conversations through the use of mobile phone microphones.
